"I know what you mean," Derek says quietly. He never got to say goodbye to his parents, or any of the rest of his family. It was just a normal day, and his last words to his mother were a muffled and sarcastic yeah, yeah as he ran out of the house with a mouth full of toast.

"I feel bad," Derek admits quietly, suddenly feeling the need to be honest. "I really wish that you could be back there with your dad, and everyone else. But-- I'm so fucking glad that you're here."
