such a terrible place, and Derek can't help to be selfishly glad that

little stupid about it. He picks up speed and rounds the bend, skidding to
a halt when he sees a doe and a fawn in their path. They freeze and stare
at him for a long moment, as deers are wont to do, before they finally tear
off into the brush.
