Jul. 25th, 2014 04:03 pmThe preparations for Derek and Helen’s food truck are pretty much complete. The truck is ready to go, all painted with their logo on the side. The menu is finalized and their first big food order has been placed. The opening is coming up, and there’s just one little thing left.
Making sure people know the truck actually exists.
Derek knows that Brian is in advertising, and he’s good at it from all things told, but he didn’t want to show up at his office because he doesn’t really have much to offer him. They got a loan for the truck, and Derek quit his job at Prohibition to help run it. If this thing flops, he’s screwed.
When he stops into the diner for a quick bite and sees Brian seated at a booth, he decides to take it as a sign. Maybe he can ask a few questions, get a few ideas. He doesn’t need a citywide marketing campaign launched. He just wants to get the word out.
He approaches the booth and sees a babbling baby in a high chair, pulled in close to the end of the table. He’d known that Brian’s kid showed up in Darrow, but he’s never actually seen him before now. He can’t really picture Brian with a kid, but he’s obviously trying, and the love he has for his sun is written all over his face.
Derek slides gracefully into the booth across from Brian, lounging like he was invited. When Brian looks up at the intrusion, Derek smirks at him and leans forward to get a closer look at the kid. He looks a little like Brian and Derek makes a funny face when the baby notices him. He can’t help it; he likes kids.
“How’s the Kinney family on this fine day?” Derek asks with a shit-eating grin as he reaches out to poke the baby’s chubby fist with a fingertip.
